Global Entry rolls out high-tech, walk-through upgrades at 7 U.S. airports
June 11, 2025
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is testing a new "Seamless Border Entry" (SBE) system that could make Global Entry even faster. Instead of stopping at a kiosk, travelers walk straight through as cameras scan their faces automatically. The goal is to remove all friction from the entry process—no lines, no stops, just walk and go.
The technology is currently being piloted at airports including Miami, Chicago O'Hare, Houston, LAX, Newark, and Toronto, with Atlanta expected to join soon. It uses advanced facial recognition to verify identities mid-stride, allowing pre-approved travelers to skip the usual checks.
CBP sees this as the next evolution of Global Entry, which already shortens customs lines for vetted travelers. With SBE, they want to make the process even more seamless. However, not everyone may be comfortable with facial recognition. For those with privacy concerns, the traditional kiosks will still be available.
The system is still in a trial phase, and CBP is considering vendors for a broader rollout. If successful, this could become the standard for low-risk international travelers entering the U.S.—a future where immigration is as simple as walking through the airport.
